My daughter is watching Anne of Green Gables on video. The Marilla character has just told her friend that she and Matthew are getting a boy from an orphanage (the "boy," of course, turns out to be Anne).
Marilla says they have asked for a boy around eleven or twelve, "old enough to help with the chores, and young enough to be brought up properly."
As someone who optimistically adopted two boys from an orphanage in Haiti, ages nine and twelve upon arrival, I'd like to add this comment:
