Overheard From the Slide
We adopted Francie, age four, from Haiti. Lillie, age five, was born to us in the "usual" way. Francie is black. Lillie is white.
They are so close in age--about nine months--that we sometimes refer to them as the "twins." I've never thought too much about this until today when I found myself snorting and peeking surreptitiously at another mom, looking for her reaction to Lillie's speech to her little boy.
Lillie and Francie were sliding and climbing on the play equipment in the doctor's waiting room when the little boy joined them. Lillie, to Little Boy: "I'm Lillie. I'm five. This is Francie, she's four. We're twins."
